At the Frieze BMW Lounge, art enthusiasts and collectors gathered to celebrate the launch of Esther Mahlangu: To Paint is in My Heart, a new book honoring the life and work of pioneering South African artist Esther Mahlangu. Esteemed art figures Azu Nwagbogu, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Thomas Girst, who authored the book and conducted exclusive interviews with Mahlangu, were present to discuss her legacy and the unique insights captured in this commemorative volume.

To Paint is in My Heart is an illuminating new book that chronicles the life and artistic journey of Esther Mahlangu, the iconic South African artist whose vibrant Ndebele paintings have gained international recognition. Known as the first woman to create a BMW Art Car in 1991, Mahlangu’s work is celebrated for its distinctive geometric patterns and powerful cultural resonance.

 

Through exclusive interviews conducted by esteemed figures Azu Nwagbogu, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Thomas Girst at Mahlangu's homestead in rural Mpumalanga, the book offers a rare glimpse into her life, creative process, and enduring impact. Readers will discover intimate reflections on her journey from rural South Africa to global acclaim, along with her thoughts on preserving her heritage through art.

The recent 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair highlighted a momentous occasion for the art world as the South African artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu's book, TO PAINT IS IN MY HEART, was unveiled. Published by Thames & Hudson, the book provides an in-depth journey through Mahlangu’s life, from her upbringing in rural Mpumalanga to her global recognition as a master of Ndebele art.
