Why Africa? — Fiat 500
Back to Projects
For the 'Why Africa?' project in Turin, Dr Esther Mahlangu was invited to apply her Ndebele painting to a Fiat 500 — an icon of Italian industrial design.
The project formed part of a wider celebration of African creativity hosted in Turin, placing Dr Mahlangu's work in dialogue with European design culture. Her hand-painted Fiat 500 joined a constellation of artistic interventions that asked 'why Africa?' and answered with the continent's depth of contemporary practice.
The collaboration extended a thread Dr Mahlangu had begun with the BMW Art Car in 1991 — translating Ndebele geometric painting onto a manufactured surface — and demonstrated the adaptability of her visual language across cultures and forms.
