Southgate Mural

In 2020, Dr Esther Mahlangu realised a large-scale mural at Southgate, Johannesburg, bringing her Ndebele painting into the public realm of the city.
The mural joined a body of public commissions that have placed Dr Mahlangu's work in the everyday environment of South African cities — from the Johannesburg Civic Theatre in 1992 to the Southgate mural — making her geometric language a visible part of the urban fabric.
The commission reflected Dr Mahlangu's longstanding commitment to painting in public, rooted in the Ndebele tradition of decorating the homestead for all to see.
