South African Reserve Bank Commission

In 2023, Dr Esther Mahlangu was commissioned by the South African Reserve Bank to design a commemorative coin, bringing her Ndebele geometric art to the national currency.

The commission placed Dr Mahlangu's visual language on one of the most widely circulated forms of public art — a coin — and recognised her contribution to South Africa's cultural heritage at the highest institutional level. Her design translated the precision and symmetry of Ndebele mural painting into the circular format of a commemorative coin.

The commission joined a lineage of national honours recognising Dr Mahlangu as one of South Africa's foremost cultural figures.
