Jean-Claude Mimran Mural — Chalet Africa, Gstaad

In 2023, Dr Esther Mahlangu painted a mural at Chalet Africa in Gstaad, Switzerland, commissioned by Jean-Claude Mimran.

The commission brought Ndebele mural painting to the Swiss Alps, extending Dr Mahlangu's practice of painting architectural surfaces into a new and unexpected context. Working on site, she transformed the chalet's walls with the bold geometric motifs of her tradition.

The project continued Dr Mahlangu's long history of mural commissions across the world — from Washington, D.C. to Johannesburg to the British Museum — and demonstrated the portability of Ndebele design across continents and climates.
