For the 2010 FIFA World Cup — the first held on African soil — Dr Esther Mahlangu contributed to the FIFA Fine Art Collection, an official programme of commissioned artworks celebrating the tournament's cultural moment.
Dr Mahlangu's participation placed Ndebele painting at the heart of a global sporting spectacle, joining a group of artists invited to interpret the spirit of the World Cup. Her contribution joined the wider visual identity of South Africa's hosting of the tournament, one of the country's defining cultural events of the decade.
The commission underscored Dr Mahlangu's status as a national cultural figure whose work could speak both to local heritage and to a worldwide audience.
