Eytys Sneaker Collaboration

In 2015, Swedish sneaker brand Eytys collaborated with Dr Esther Mahlangu on a limited-edition release of its 'Doja' sneaker, embroidered with her Ndebele geometric designs.

The collaboration, launched during Paris Fashion Week, paired a cult Scandinavian footwear label with one of South Africa's most celebrated artists. Designer Max Schiller travelled to Johannesburg to meet Dr Mahlangu and document the collaboration, with the sneakers offered in black and white and bearing an embroidered version of her colourful motifs on each shoe's side.

The project placed Ndebele painting within the world of contemporary fashion and streetwear, introducing Dr Mahlangu's visual language to a new, global generation.
