In 1997, Dr Esther Mahlangu returned to the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington, D.C. — where she had made her American debut three years earlier — to paint a second mural.
The commission reaffirmed the museum's commitment to presenting Ndebele mural painting as a living contemporary practice. Working on site, Dr Mahlangu translated the bold geometric vocabulary of the homestead onto the museum wall, inviting visitors to witness a tradition ordinarily rooted in the rural Highveld of South Africa.
The return engagement cemented a lasting relationship between Dr Mahlangu and NMWA, and helped establish her enduring presence within North American institutions.
