In 2006, Dr Esther Mahlangu was conferred the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) by the President of South Africa.

The National Orders are the country's highest awards, recognising citizens who have made exceptional contributions to the nation. Dr Mahlangu received the silver class of the Order of Ikhamanga — awarded for achievements in the arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport — in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts and the international profile she gave to Ndebele culture.
