Honorary Doctorate — University of Johannesburg

In 2018, the University of Johannesburg conferred an honorary doctorate on Dr Esther Mahlangu in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to art and culture.

The degree joined a growing number of academic honours recognising Dr Mahlangu not only as an artist, but as a scholar of her tradition — a keeper and innovator of Ndebele painting whose work has reshaped the place of African visual practice within the academy and beyond.
